Obituary for Lyndahl "Lindy" Slayton
Lyndahl I. “Lindy” Slayton, age 87 of Janesville died on Monday, September 25, 2017 at his home. He was born in Janesville on May 21, 1930, the only child of the late Ward and Elsie (Olson) Slayton. Lindy graduated from Janesville High School and proudly served his country in the US Navy. He enlisted on July 17, 1948, where he served as an electrician and engineer. He served on the USS Fechteler (DD-870) in the Far East and off the West Coast of the United States, in preparation for conflict during the Korean War. Lindy was honorably discharged on December 6, 1952.
On May 22, 1954 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Janesville he married Genevieve A. “Gen” Finley. She predeceased him on May 7, 2007. Lindy worked for many years at General Motors as a supervisor in the paint department and the last 7 years in quality control. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, life member of the VFW Kienow-Hilt Post 1621, American Legion, and a very active and proud member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Janesville Lodge 254. Lindy was a major supporter of the Elks, providing endless advice and monetary support for the many local programs and well as State and National programs. He has been a member for over 56 years and served on many committees and officer positions in the club. Lindy was a very kind and generous gentleman who will be missed by his relatives, friends, and neighbors. Over the years, Lindy and Gen enjoyed hosting many parties and gatherings at their home, most notably the 4th of July parties, where Lindy entertained the crowd with his fireworks display.
He is survived by his uncle: Rex Slayton of Sparta, WI, cousins: John (Judith) Slayton and Kevin Slayton; brother and sister-in-law: James and Mary Finley of Monroe, WI; his close friend Dan Gable; many nieces and nephews on Jen’s side who he was very fond of. In addition to his wife, parents, and mother and father-in-law: Clarence and Ellen (Mooney) Finley, Lindy was predeceased by his aunt: Elizabeth Slayton; cousins: Thomas Slayton and his wife Dixie, and Eric Slayton; sister-and brother-in-law: Robert and Nancy Finley; sisters-in-law: Mary Ellen Dunphy, and Sister Bernal Finley, R.S.M.; and brother-in-law: Richard Dunphy.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 2, 2017 at the Whitcomb – Lynch Funeral Home with Rev. James Johnson officiating. Burial will be next to his wife at Oak Hill Cemetery with full Military Rites provided by VFW Kienow-Hilt Post 1621. A celebration and luncheon honoring Lindy’s life will be held at the Janesville Elks Lodge 254 following the burial. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM, with an Elks Memorial Service beginning at 5:00 PM. On Monday a visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials would be greatly appreciated if they were made to Janesville Elks Scholarship Fund.
A very warm and heartfelt thank you to Lindy’s friends and neighbors for the wonderful care, compassion, and support given Lindy over the last year, especially Dan Gable, Carol Woodstock, Barb Curtis, Ken Kluge, and Gerry and Marta Lynch. Also, a very sincere thank you the staff at Agrace HospiceCare and Brightstar Care for their professional care and support during Lindy’s final journey.
