Obituary for Daniel Zahn

Daniel Zahn
Daniel Kevin “Danny” Zahn, age 61, of Janesville, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, September 28, 2017 at SSM Health/St. Mary’s Hospital-Janesville. He was born November 30, 1955 in Janesville, the son of the late Robert W. & Ellen Janette (Franklin) Zahn. Dan attended St. Patrick’s, St. Mary’s, Holy Name Seminary, and Craig High School, Class of 1975. On November 22, 1975, he married the former Beverly E. Kersten at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and specialized in Fire Fighting and Safety. After his honorable discharge after 4 years of service, Dan was hired as a Fire Fighter for the Sterling, IL Fire Department. He served the Sterling community for over 26 years, retiring in 2007. While working in Sterling, Dan was a very active member and leader of the I.A.F.F. Local 2301, serving as President of their union. He also was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus.
Dan enjoyed woodworking in his shop, and was an accomplished painter, as he owned and operated his own painting business in Sterling. He was an avid Badger and Packer fan, and always enjoyed being in the outdoors! Dan would love a good conversation involving politics, and he was always straight-forward about where he stood on an issue! His family meant everything to him, and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren!
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his 3 children, Joshua Zahn, of LaCrosse, WI, Sandra (John) McClellan, of Janesville, and Robert (Karen) Zahn, of Cross Plains, WI; his 3 beloved grandchildren, Cassidy Zahn, James McClellan, and Connor McClellan; his 5 siblings, Christine Dunham, Judy Bienash, both of Janesville, James (Sue) Zahn, of Madison, WI, Mike (Susan) Zahn, and Catherine Zahn, both also of Janesville; his 2 beloved dogs, Herman and Gertrude;, and by his nieces, nephews, and friends. Besides his parents, Dan was preceded in death by 2 nephews, Damien Bienash and Clay Bienash.
Memorial services with a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at NATIVITY OF MARY PARISH, 313 E. Wall St., with Fr. Robert Butz officiating.
