Neil E. Bolton, age 89, of Janesville died on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Agrace Center for Hospice & Palliative Care in Janesville, with his family by his side. He was born in Phillips, WI, on December 12, 1927, the son of the late Fred “Fritz” and Dolores (Mannel) Bolton. He attended High School in Phillips and joined the Merchant Marines. Neil moved to Janesville in the early 1950’s and worked many years for Wisconsin Power & Light retiring in 1985. On May 22, 1951, Neil married the love of his life, Betty A. Mullen and together they had five children. Betty predeceased him on May 25, 2012.
Neil was an avid fisherman and hunter who spent much of his free time at his “shack” in Phillips on Dardis Lake. Never wanting to brag, but he would always be the first one to tell you that he was the best at both. There are many stories that came from the shack and the woods around it. His freezer was always full of food from the waters and the wild. He truly loved that part of the world.
Neil was also a champion at canning and smoking foods with an article that was featured in the Janesville Gazette. He took pride of his talents, but never said anything about the mess he made doing them. Cleaning up was always Betty’s job. In his later years, he liked his weekly trips to the casino and the Sunday meat raffles at East Point where he always shouted, “I won again!” His laughter, and “BS” will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Neil’s father had 15 brothers and sisters, so the Northwoods area of Phillips has many Bolton family members that will deeply miss him as well as Betty’s family.
He survived by three children: Charles (Jennifer) Bolton of Phillips, Shaughn (Katherine) Bolton of Janesville, and their two daughters: Maggie and Olivia; and Glenna Ping of Janesville; and her two sons: Joshua Bolton, and Ryan Ping; brother and sisters-in-law: Dan and Kay Mullen of Beloit, WI, and Donna Ward of Laurinburg, NC; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his wife and parents, Neil was predeceased by two sons: Michael on June 22, 2008 and Neil, Jr., who died shortly after birth; his siblings: Wilfred (Shirley) Bolton and Janice (Vince) O’Flaherty.
A sincere and heartfelt thank you to Neil’s niece Eileen, who was always there when extra help was needed. Also thank you the staff at Agrace Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion given to Neil during his final journey.
Following Neil’s wish, private services will be held in Phillips and his cremated remains will be scattered in the Northwoods, which he always referred to as heaven.
