Obituary for JoAnn Schmitz (Viney)

JoAnn Schmitz (Viney)
JoAnn I. Schmitz, age 89, of Janesville, passed away Friday evening, January 5, 2018 at Rock Haven. She was born April 24, 1928 in Janesville, the daughter of the late George R. & Gertrude (Suhr) Viney. She was married to William J. Schmitz in 1953, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Janesville. He preceded her in death on April 3, 2001. JoAnn attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School, and then attended Janesville High School, graduating in the Class of 1946. While in high school, she was involved in many extra-curricular activities. She was a member of the National Honor Society, choir, band, the Blue Jay, the Bluebird, and conducted a baton twirling class during her senior year. She was also involved in different musical reviews. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary in the Purchasing Department for 9 years at Parker Pen, before leaving to begin raising her family. After her children started school, JoAnn was again employed by the Parker Pen Co. as an executive secretary and administrative assistant to the Director of Purchasing. She retired in 1983 after accepting an early retirement program. JoAnn and her husband had a retirement home in northern Wisconsin on St. Croix Lake in Solon Springs, WI. They enjoyed many years of fishing, boating, water skiing, and golf, from April through September. After Bill suffered many medical problems, they sold the lake home in 2000 and returned to their home in Janesville. JoAnn was a charter member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
She is survived by her 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Galbrecht, of West Bend, WI, Kyle Galbrecht and Andrew Laabs, both of Janesville, George Schmitz, of Washington, and Gretchen Schmitz, of Missouri; her son-in-law, David L. Galbrecht, of Janesville; 2 sisters-in-law, Patricia Steinke, and Rosalie (Jim) Kakuske, both of Janesville; her step-brother, John Keating, of Illinois; her sister-in-law, Patricia Daly, also of Illinois; and her very special niece, Maryann Schiehsl, of Oxford, MI. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Marie Galbrecht; her son, Dr. John M. Schmitz; her sister, Jean Marie Meicher; and her beloved step-mother, Marcella Viney.
Memorial services with a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1238 E. Racine St., with Fr. Joseph Baxter officiating. Memorials in her name would be appreciated to St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
JoAnn was the very best Grandma, and was so loved by all who knew her! She will be dearly missed by her loving family!
If tears could build a staircase, and memories a lane, we’d walk all the way to Heaven to be with you again!
