Obituary for Sandra "Sandy" Bowen (Johnson)

Sandra "Sandy" Bowen (Johnson)
Janesville, WI Sandra Jean Bowen, age 62 of Janesville, formerly of Madison and Blanchardville left her frail earthly body behind at the Mercy Hospital ICU on Monday, January 29, 2018, to be with her savior—after a long struggle with breast cancer that began in 2011. She was born on February 10, 1955 in a Sault Ste. Marie, MI to then USAF Staff Sergeant Edward and Virginia (Johnson) Johnson. She had such fond memories of growing up on the family dairy farm just south of Blanchardville. She graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1973 and went on to earn her Medical Transcriptionist Certificate from the Herzing Institute in Madison. Sandy began working for the Dean Clinic in 1976 as a Receptionist and later worked at the Dean Business Office until 2001, when she retired to become a full-time, most wonderful homemaker. She married Donald J. “Jeff” Bowen on July 4, 1992 at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church she grew up worshiping in. They lived in Mount Horeb and Madison, before moving to Janesville in 2005. Sandy was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Janesville.

Sandy loved to travel and especially enjoyed her 2004 trip to Norway as part of a “Fabulous Farm Babe” Pam Jahnke agricultural tour. When home, she especially loved working in her kitchen, where she lovingly and skillfully prepared a wide variety of Norwegian treats; treats which she generously shared with so many that she knew and met. Sandy was so fond of saying, “I’m 100% Norwegian.”

Sandy is survived by her husband Jeff Bowen; a step son Scott Bowen of California, Maryland; a brother Bruce (Lisa Fangmann) Johnson of Madison; a sister Susan (Kenneth) Massey of Middleton; a Mother-in-Law Suzanne Bowen of Janesville; Aunts / Uncles, Margaret Arneson, Gloria Evert, Arlyn & Helen Johnson, Norma Dibbert and Jim Williams; many cousins, and several nieces and a nephew, mostly in the Madison area. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Virginia Johnson, and her Father-in-Law Charles Bowen.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 709 Milton Ave., Janesville; Rev. Richard Lehmann of Peace Lutheran Church officiating. Friends may call on Friday February 23, 2018 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM at the Whitcomb-Lynch Funeral Home; and from 9:30 AM until the 11:00 AM funeral service at the church on Saturday. A most special catered lunch at the church will immediately follow the service. A private committal service will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Blanchardville, WI this summer. If you would like to give flowers, the family recommends Barbs All Season’s Flowers of Janesville, she’s quite skilled and was so kind to Sandy over the years, or memorials to St. Matthew’s Lutheran School, the Rock Co. Cancer Coalition, or Justice for a Cure. Online memories and condolences can be shared with the family at

The family would like to especially thank Mercyhealth’s Dr. Emily Robinson and Dr. Kevin Kozak, their staff, the oncology teams, the radiology workers, the social workers, the Emergency Room personnel, and the ICU staff, so kind in our darkest hours; previous caregivers at the UW Carbone Cancer Center in Madison; Sandy’s initial caregivers at SSM St. Mary’s Oncology Department in Janesville; Lt. Plath and the crew of JFD Fire Station #4, C Shift; and the American Red Cross—Sandy gave blood by the gallons over the years, helped coordinate / feed donors very well at quarterly blood drives at Peace Lutheran Church, and in her final year of life needed many units of blood herself.

The family would also like to thank friends Sue & Roger Erdman, Sandra Mascari-Devitt, her many friends at Peace Lutheran Church, Justice for a Cure’s Joan Kamholz; Features Hair Salon’s Roberta Haakinson & Pam Lawrence for helping Sandy with her wig selection, shaping and fitting—very important to her; and her many friends in the Mercyhealth Cancer Support Group. Group friends, please remain hopeful, as everyone’s cancer fight is so different. For certain we are still missing some, and for that we sincerely apologize.
