Gloria Schmidt (Creek)
Gloria Faith Ruth Schmidt, age 90, of Janesville died on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Janesville. She was born in Milwaukee, WI on December 4, 1927, the daughter of Robert and Ruth (Meilick) Creek. Gloria attended a country school for her first three years and after she moved to Janesville she attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School. In June of 1946, Gloria graduated from Janesville High School. Gloria met her future husband Martin L. Schmidt when she was twelve years old while playing softball in the neighborhood. They were married on September 1, 1946 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, which was also her grandparents wedding anniversary. Together they had seven children; five sons and two daughters. Martin predeceased her on November 10, 2003.
Over the years, Gloria worked at Parker Pen, Mercy Hospital in the surgery department, and for the City of Janesville as a crossing guard. Gloria has been a longtime member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was active with LWML, Alter Guild and the Adult Fellowship Group. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, ECHO Thrift Store, and visiting residences at Cedar Crest. Gloria was a very loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend to many, who will miss her dearly.
She is survived by her children: Ray Schmidt of Janesville, Bob Schmidt of Ft. Wayne, IN, Mike (Shirlee) Schmidt of Janesville, Eileen (Pete) Deyer, of Ft. Wayne, IN, Steve (Kathy) Schmidt of Ossian, IN, Jeff (Jill) Schmidt of Janesville, and Ruthann Schmidt of Uniondale, IN; 21 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her sister: Shirley Acott of Las Vegas, NV, sisters-in-law: Diane Schmidt of Antigo, WI, and Patricia Creek of Texas; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 16, 2018 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Daniel Decker and Rev. James Hendrikson officiating. Burial will be next to her husband at Milton Lawns Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church.
