Obituary for Harry Kowal

Harry  Kowal
Harry E. Kowal, age 96, of Janesville, passed away Friday morning, May 11, 2018 at Evansville Manor. He was born December 19, 1921 in Janesville, the son of the late Harry & Mary (Kral) Kowal. He attended schools in Janesville, and was a graduate of Janesville High School, Class of 1939. He also attended Milton College. On November 30, 1944 he married Margaret E. Benzie at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on July 10, 2016. Harry was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II. He was a Radioman for the 2nd Engineer Special Brigade in Papua, New Guinea in the South Pacific. Harry returned home to Janesville and worked for over 36 years for Gilman Engineering & Manufacturing, retiring in 1985 as a Senior Cost Estimator. Harry was a longtime member of St. William’s Catholic Church. He was also a Life Member of the V.F.W. Kienow-Hilt Post 1621.
He is survived by his 7 children, Kathryn Ellis, Arlinda Benn, Dan Kowal, all of Janesville, Dave (Sharon) Kowal, of Delafield, WI, Janet (John) Kannenberg, of Waterloo, WI, Mary Sue Seales, of Janesville, and Angela (Kim) Booth, of Williamston, MI; his 21 beloved grandchildren, Brent Ellis, Craig (Angie) Ellis, Jennifer (Shawn) Raymond, Lynette (Brian) Mertz, Aaron (Suzanne Turek) Benn, John Kowal, Shavon (Brandon Bauer) Kowal, Robert Kowal, Katie Kowal, Heather (Adam) Korte, Lindsay (Andy) Dayton, Josh Kanter-Kowal, Jessica (fiancée, Kent Chau) Kanter-Kowal, Victoria Kowal, Brett Kowal, Paul (Allison) Kannenberg, Becky (Chad) Homan, Samantha (Mike) Gorman, Stephanie (Hugh) McConville, Alyssia Booth, and Krissy Booth; his 21 dear great-grandchildren, Lauren, Gabby, Owen, Evan, Aden, Domnick, Peyton, McKenna, Keaton, Arya, Kylee, Brayden, Phylicity, Rex, Avery, Caleb, Hugh, Monroe, Arya, Connor, and Carter; and by nieces, nephews, and friends. Besides his wife and parents, Harry was preceded in death by his 6 siblings, Olga, Ernie, Robert, Floyd, George, and Jean, and by his great-grandson, Dalton.
Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at ST. WILLIAM’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 580 N. Arch St., with Fr. Brian Dulli officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors accorded by the V.F.W. Kienow-Hilt Post 1621 will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the WHITCOMB-LYNCH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. Visitation will also be from 10:00 until 11:00A.M. on Thursday at the CHURCH.
