Obituary for Debra Scott Whitcomb (Dampier)

Debra Scott Whitcomb (Dampier)
Debra Scott (Dampier) Whitcomb, age 59, of Janesville, died Monday evening, July 11, 2016 at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center following a 16 month battle with Interstitial Lung Disease. Deb was born March 25, 1957 in Janesville, the second of 5 daughters of the late Kenneth & Joyce (Hagar) Dampier. She attended school in Janesville, and was a graduate of Parker High School, Class of 1975. She then attended Madison Business College. She worked as a legal secretary for several law firms and title companies in Janesville. She worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant in Child Protective Services for Rock County until her retirement.
On October 17, 2009, she married the love of her life, James M. Whitcomb, at the Glacier Canyon Lodge in the Wisconsin Dells, WI.
She followed her dream of attending Culinary School by attending classes part time at the Art Institute of Wisconsin in the evenings while working full time at CPS. Following her retirement, she attended school full time and graduated from the Art Institute of Wisconsin with an Associate’s Degree in Culinary-Baking and Pastries. Before her illness, she was planning on opening her own bakery, specializing in cakes and cookies.
Deb loved baking and cooking, tending to her flowers and vegetable garden, enjoyed bowling, golf, traveling (especially to the beach and water!) and spending time with her family and friends, but especially with her 2 children, Matthew and Emily, and Jim. She will be remembered for her sparkling smile, her wonderful spirit, her sense of humor, and her gentle and genuine personality. She was diagnosed with MS in 2007, and always had a positive outlook in her fight. Deb had raised Matthew as a single Mom, and always lived her life fighting to make a better future for Matthew. After reconnecting with Jim, she created a home for her expanded family and enjoyed creating new memories with them!
She is survived by her husband, Jim, her beloved son, Matthew K. Dampier, of Milwaukee, her dear step-daughter, Emily A. Whitcomb, of Plover, WI; her 4 sisters, Yvonne (Craig) Brace, Susan Luek, both of Janesville, Ann (Mark) Kelly, of Hartland, WI, and Carol (Jim Seales) Dampier, of Janesville; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John & Jean Whitcomb, of Beloit, WI; her nieces and nephews, Christopher (Gretchen) Brace, Michael Brace, and Kathryn (Luke) DeZeeuw; Robert Luek, Jacob Luek, and Anthony (Sarah) Luek; David Kelly, Steven Kelly, and Daniel Kelly; Malissa (Brett Reichard) Dampier; Tom (April Stephan) Whitcomb; great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth Dampier and Joyce Dampier.
A Celebration of Deb’s Life will take place from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, July 22, 2016, with a Memorial Service following at 7:00 P.M at the WHITCOMB-LYNCH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES. Rev. Jerry Amstutz will officiate. In honor of Deb’s fun-loving spirit, please wear your favorite Packer, Badger, Brewer, or Hawaiian garb! Memorials in her name may be made to the American Lung Association, 13100 W. Lisbon Rd., #700, Brookfield, WI 53005, or at www.lung.org.
