Obituary

It is never easy to say good-bye to a loved one, especially when our time together was too short. Derek Liebelt, born June 6, 1988, passed away on December 2, 2018, surrounded by his family.
Derek Liebelt was born in Sioux City, Iowa into a loving family. He will be forever missed by his mother, Susie James (Tim), and his father, Jeff Liebelt (Kelly), and his sister, Jessica Schmidt (Kyler). Derek shared his heart with all but gave his special love and devotion to his fiancée, Danica Mumbler. Derek was a caring, funny, smart, young man with a potential for greatness. His big heart was open to everyone, and his easy manner was appreciated by those who knew him well. Derek attended Marshall Middle School and Craig High School and spent the majority of his life making friends in Janesville, WI.
Derek loved to go fishing, a hobby he picked up from special times with his dad and continued to share with good friends. He also enjoyed boating with the family and playing Frisbee golf. He was open to trying any activity as long as he was with family and friends. He was a huge music fan and knew the artists and words to many songs. Music was a way that he bonded with others. It was great pleasure to catch him singing away to his favorite tune. Derek gained a love of cooking from his mother and seemed at his best when he was cooking up something special for people to enjoy. Derek’s sense of humor was a gift he shared with all of us.
Derek battled against the disease of alcoholism. Derek never gave up the fight, but ultimately his body did. He passed from complications associated with that disease.
There are numerous family members; grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who will hold the happy memories of Derek close in their heart. Yet, we know he is now at peace and has resumed his special relationship with Papa Jake and others who have gone before him.
We invite you to leave a note of condolence or share a favorite memory with the family by visiting Derek’s guestbook page.

My heart was sadden when I read of the loss of your beautiful son, Derek and I wanted to send my warmest condolences to the family. To lose a precious child, a part of you, can bring such overwhelming grief but the God of all comfort tells us at 2 Kings 20:5 He hears your prayers, sees your tears and feels your pain. Please go to jw.org to read in the Bible at John 5:28,29 that not only does God care but lovingly gives assurance that you will hold him in your arms once again. Until God’s promises come true may every detail of Derek’s life, every memory of the love you felt, flood and overtake you with calm and peace to help you through the dark moments. Again so very sorry for your heartache💐

Derek was a truly great person and friend. He will be deeply missed, but always remembered. He was always one to make people laugh and smile. I will forever cherish the memories he gave me. I loved him like a brother and always will. My prayers go out to Jeff and the rest of the family.

My Family, words could never express the sorrow in my heart today. I’m with you as we walk through this. Derek will be missed everyday. It’s only my thoughts of him in heaven with his first family that give me strength. It is a comfort to me to know that he is in the arms of those who have passed before him. I love you all so much. Hand in hand. Aunt Krissy.
