Derek Liebelt was born in Sioux City, Iowa into a loving family. He will be forever missed by his mother, Susie James (Tim), and his father, Jeff Liebelt (Kelly), and his sister, Jessica Schmidt (Kyler). Derek shared his heart with all but gave his special love and devotion to his fiancée, Danica Mumbler. Derek was a caring, funny, smart, young man with a potential for greatness. His big heart was open to everyone, and his easy manner was appreciated by those who knew him well. Derek attended Marshall Middle School and Craig High School and spent the majority of his life making friends in Janesville, WI.
Derek loved to go fishing, a hobby he picked up from special times with his dad and continued to share with good friends. He also enjoyed boating with the family and playing Frisbee golf. He was open to trying any activity as long as he was with family and friends. He was a huge music fan and knew the artists and words to many songs. Music was a way that he bonded with others. It was great pleasure to catch him singing away to his favorite tune. Derek gained a love of cooking from his mother and seemed at his best when he was cooking up something special for people to enjoy. Derek’s sense of humor was a gift he shared with all of us.
Derek battled against the disease of alcoholism. Derek never gave up the fight, but ultimately his body did. He passed from complications associated with that disease.
There are numerous family members; grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who will hold the happy memories of Derek close in their heart. Yet, we know he is now at peace and has resumed his special relationship with Papa Jake and others who have gone before him.
